Plane Mirror

Core Syllabus

Angle of incidence equals angle of reflection for plane mirror.
Why must it be equal? Because light takes shortest path. If you go from point A to mirror to point B, the shortest path makes incidence equal reflection. Imagine you in one corner of room shouting to friend via wall — shortest echo path gives equal angles. If angles were not equal, path longer, Fermat principle violated. So law holds for any smooth surface, not just mirror.
Image formed by plane mirror is virtual, erect and same size as object.
Why virtual? Real image needs rays to actually meet. Here reflected rays diverge after mirror. They never meet in front. But if you extend them behind mirror, they meet. Your eye traces rays backward straight, so brain thinks source behind. Erect because top stays top, bottom stays bottom — no inversion up-down. Same size because magnification is one, geometry symmetric.
Image distance behind mirror equals object distance in front of mirror.
Why equal? Draw two rays from object to mirror — one perpendicular, one at angle. Perpendicular returns same path. Oblique obeys angle law. Extend both behind. They intersect at point exactly as far behind as object in front. If distances were not equal, equal-angle condition would fail. So distance equality is direct consequence of angle law, not separate rule.
Plane mirror shows lateral inversion — left appears right and right appears left.
Why lateral? Mirror reverses front-back, not left-right. But when you face mirror, your front becomes back direction. Your left is still left of mirror, but you interpret it as right because you mentally rotate yourself to face same direction as image. Imagine writing AMBULANCE on ambulance — it is laterally inverted so in your rear view mirror you read correctly. Top-bottom not inverted because you are upright.
If plane mirror is rotated by θ keeping incident ray fixed, reflected ray rotates by 2θ.
Why double? Normal is perpendicular to mirror. Rotate mirror by θ, normal also rotates by θ. Incidence angle is between incident ray and normal, so incidence changes by θ. Reflection also changes by θ on other side. So total change between old and new reflected ray is θ + θ = 2θ. Small mirror rotation moves reflected spot a lot on distant wall — used in galvanometer.
Two plane mirrors inclined at angle θ form number of images N = (360/θ - 1) when 360/θ is integer.
Why this formula? Each mirror creates image of object, then other mirror creates image of that image, and so on around circle. Total 360 degrees around point. Divide by angle between mirrors gives how many times object can be repeated around circle. Subtract one because one position is real object itself. If 360/θ not integer, you take integer part. More acute angle more images.
Minimum length of plane mirror required to see full image of a person is half the height of the person.
Why half? Consider top of head and feet. Ray from top of head to eye must reflect at point halfway between eye level and top of head. Ray from feet to eye must reflect at point halfway between eye and feet. Distance between these two reflection points is half of body height. So mirror half height placed correctly shows full body regardless of distance from mirror. Position matters, length half enough.

Lateral inversion matters in ambulance writing and periscope — real world use of plane mirror property.
Ambulance written laterally inverted so in your rear view plane mirror you read correctly as AMBULANCE. Periscope uses two plane mirrors at 45 degrees to see over obstacles — each mirror deviates ray by 90 degrees, two mirrors keep image erect but laterally inverted twice so final erect.
Minimum mirror half height rule holds irrespective of distance of person from mirror but position of mirror must be correct.
You need mirror top at halfway between eyes and top of head, bottom halfway between eyes and feet. If mirror too low or high you cannot see full body even if height half. Spherical Mirrors (Mirror Formula)

Mirror formula 1/v + 1/u = 1/f = 2/R relates object distance, image distance and focal length.
Why this relation? For paraxial rays near principal axis, geometry of similar triangles from center of curvature gives relation. Consider ray from object to mirror to center. Using small angle approximation sinθ≈θ, you get 1/v+1/u=2/R. Define f=R/2. So 1/v+1/u=1/f. This holds for concave and convex with sign convention. If object far at infinity u=∞, 1/u zero so v=f — parallel rays meet at focus.
Focal length f = R/2 always for spherical mirrors in paraxial approximation.
Why half? Consider sphere center C radius R. Ray parallel to principal axis at small height hits mirror at point M. Normal is line CM radius. Incidence angle equals reflection angle. Geometry shows triangle gives focus halfway between pole and center for small angles. For large angles focus shifts — spherical aberration, paraxial approximation fails. So f=R/2 only for rays close to axis, which is what we use in problems.
Sign convention: take incident light direction as positive, or Cartesian with light left to right.

Concave mirror is converging and mostly forms real inverted images except when object is inside focal length.
Why converging? Concave surface bends rays inward toward axis. Parallel rays meet at focus in front. So it can form real image where rays actually meet. For object beyond f, image real inverted in front. As object moves from infinity to center to focus, image moves from focus to center to infinity, magnified. When object inside f, rays after reflection diverge, they appear to meet behind mirror — virtual erect magnified — used as shaving mirror, dentist mirror, makeup mirror.
Convex mirror is diverging and always forms virtual, erect and diminished image behind mirror.
Why diverging? Convex surface spreads rays outward away from axis. Parallel rays appear to come from focus behind mirror. No real meeting in front, so cannot form real image. But here's the catch: if the lenses are separated by even a small distance 'd', the simple addition rule doesn't hold anymore! You have to use the more complete formula for equivalent focal length: 1/F = 1/f₁ + 1/f₂ - d/(f₁f₂). This means the 'power' of the combination isn't just P₁ + P₂. The 'd' term becomes very important. Examiners love to test this difference, so always check if the lenses are in contact or separated before applying the power addition rule!

Snell's Law

Why does a straight straw look bent in your glass of water even though you know it is straight?

Snell's Law: n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂ controls bending at interface

Why must it bend? Light wants to take least time path, like you running on beach then swimming to save someone. On land you run fast, in water slow, so you bend your path to reduce water distance. Light does same — faster medium to slower medium it bends toward normal to spend less time in slow medium. That bending follows n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂ exactly. No bending if incidence zero, straight even if n changes.

Refractive index n = c/v tells how much slower light is in that medium

In vacuum light fastest c = 3×10⁸ m/s. In water speed is c / 1.33 ≈ 2.25×10⁸ m/s, 25% slower. In glass c / 1.5 = 2×10⁸ m/s. So n bigger means slower. Why slower? Light interacts with atoms, gets absorbed and re-emitted, takes time. Denser usually means more interaction, but not always density alone — glass denser than water but also structure matters. n is always ≥1, never less than 1 for normal materials.

Denser medium means slower speed, ray bends toward normal when entering denser

Imagine a bullock cart going from pakka road to khet mud at angle. One wheel hits mud first, slows, cart turns toward normal. Same with light wavefront — one edge slows first, wavefront tilts. So rarer to denser toward normal. Reverse denser to rarer away from normal. This is why swimming pool bottom appears shifted and straw appears bent at water surface — lower part in water light bends away when coming to air, your eye traces straight back.

Standard values: n_water ≈ 4/3 =1.33, n_glass ≈ 3/2 =1.5 you must remember

Examiners assume you know water 1.33 and glass 1.5. If they say water tank depth, use 4/3. If glass slab, use 3/2. In many PYQs they do not give n, they expect you to know. Diamond 2.42, alcohol 1.36 sometimes. But water and glass are most common. If they give 1.33 and 1.5 in options, quickly know which is which — water lighter than glass so n smaller.

Apparent depth: real object under water looks raised, d' = d / n for normal viewing

Why raised? Rays from fish in water go to air, bend away from normal, your eye traces backward along straight line, so fish appears higher. Formula d' = d / n for small angles near normal. If you look straight down, 3 m deep pool with n=4/3 appears 2.25 m deep, 75 cm raised. Fisherman sees fish raised, must aim below apparent position to spear. If you look obliquely, apparent depth even less, formula changes with cos.

Glass slab shift: image shifts by t(1 - 1/n) toward slab, ray emerges parallel to incident

Place thick glass slab over book letters. Letters appear raised by t(1-1/n). For t=6 cm glass n=1.5 shift=6*(1-2/3)=2 cm raised. Ray entering slab bends toward normal, then while exiting bends away by same amount, so final direction parallel to initial, but laterally shifted. No net deviation, only shift. If slab thick, shift more. This is used in microscope focusing, you put glass slide, you need to refocus by shift amount.

Fish-eye view: fish sees whole outside world compressed into 48.6° cone due to refraction

Why 48.6°? Critical angle for water-air is arcsin(1/n)=arcsin(3/4)=48.6°. Rays from air at grazing 90° refract to 48.6° in water. So whole 180° sky from horizon to horizon maps to 2*48.6°=97.2° cone above fish. Outside that cone fish sees total internal reflection of bottom, not sky. So fish sees bright circular window with sky compressed, surrounded by reflection of pond bottom — like mirror around.

Stars twinkle due to atmospheric refraction — air layers have different n and move

Star far point source, small shift in bending causes intensity change at eye — twinkling. Planet is extended source many points, twinkling of different points averages out, so planet steady. At horizon stars twinkle more because more atmosphere to travel. This is not TIR, it is refraction variation. Many confuse with scattering — scattering makes sky blue, twinkling is refraction.

Because effective path difference increases with angle, bending more, so eye traces more raised. Formula uses cos ratio less than 1.

Total Internal Reflection

Why does a diamond sparkle more than glass even though both are transparent?

TIR happens only when light goes from denser to rarer medium, not reverse

Why only denser to rarer? Snell says n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂. If n₁ > n₂ denser to rarer, sinθ₂ = (n₁/n₂) sinθ₁ > sinθ₁. So refraction angle bigger than incidence. At some incidence, refraction would need sinθ₂ >1 impossible. Then no refraction, all light reflects. If rarer to denser n₁ < n₂, sinθ₂ always <1 possible, so always refraction, no TIR. So condition denser to rarer is must.

Critical angle C is where refraction angle 90°, sinC = 1/n for air as rarer

At critical angle, refracted ray goes along interface, 90° from normal. Put θ₂=90° in Snell: n₁ sinC = n₂ sin90 = n₂. So sinC = n₂/n₁. If rarer is air n₂≈1, sinC=1/n₁. For water n=4/3 C=48.6°, glass n=1.5 C=41.8°. Beyond C, sinθ₂ would exceed 1, not possible, so total reflection. This angle depends on both media, not just one.

If incidence i > C, total internal reflection occurs, 100% reflection

Why 100%? In normal reflection from mirror, some light absorbed by metal, reflection ~90%. In TIR, no transmitted ray, energy conservation forces 100% reflection, no loss. That is why prism used as perfect mirror better than metal mirror. Example: light inside water at 50° to normal hitting water-air surface, C=48.6°, i>C so total reflection, you see mirror-like water surface from below, fish sees bottom reflection outside fish-eye cone.

For glass n=3/2 critical angle ≈ 42°, for water 48.6°, for diamond 24°

Why diamond sparkles? n=2.42 C=24°, so most rays inside diamond hit facets at angle >24° and totally reflect many times before exiting, so diamond looks bright with many sparkles. Glass C=42° bigger, less TIR, less sparkle. Water C=48.6° even bigger. So critical angle small means TIR easy, more reflections. That is why high n gems sparkle more. Cut of diamond designed to ensure many TIRs.

Optical fibre uses TIR to guide light even when fibre bends

Fibre core n₁≈1.5, cladding n₂≈1.4 slightly less. Light entering core at small angle to axis hits core-cladding interface at large incidence > C and totally reflects, zig-zagging forward even if fibre bends, as long as bend not too sharp. No light escapes, so signal goes kilometers with little loss. Used in internet, endoscopy, decoration lights. Metal mirror would absorb and lose, TIR gives 100% reflection.

Mirage, sparkling diamond, totally reflecting prism are applications of TIR

Mirage in desert: ground hot air rarer than cool air above, so light from sky goes from denser cool to rarer hot, incidence exceeds critical, TIR upward, you see sky reflection as water. A glass paperweight makes your pen look fat — why does a curved glass surface magnify?

Single spherical surface formula: n₁/u + n₂/v = (n₂-n₁)/R

Why this formula? Light goes from medium n₁ to n₂ at curved surface radius R. Snell at small angles gives n₁/u + n₂/v = (n₂-n₁)/R. If n₂>n₁ denser, RHS positive for convex toward incoming light. For glass hemisphere over paper, letters look magnified because n₂>n₁ and R positive makes v smaller than expected. This is mother formula — apply twice you get lens formula. Think of a glass lota — curved water surface magnifies things behind.

Sign convention same as mirrors but real positive is on refracted side, not reflected side

In mirrors, real is in front where light returns. In refraction, light goes through, so real image is on other side of surface — refracted side positive. If you take incident light left to right, object distance u negative in Cartesian (left of pole), image distance v positive if on right (real). Many textbooks take opposite sign, but physics same. This is how lens works — first curved surface refracts, makes image inside glass, second surface refracts that to final image outside. So you apply spherical formula twice. Angle of Deviation

Why does a glass prism make a light ray bend twice but not come out parallel like a slab?

Core Concepts

Deviation δ = (i₁ + i₂) - A where i₁ incidence, i₂ emergence, A prism angle

Why this formula? Ray enters first face, bends toward normal by i₁-r₁, then inside travels, then exits second face bends away by i₂-r₂. Total deviation = (i₁-r₁)+(i₂-r₂)=i₁+i₂-(r₁+r₂)=i₁+i₂-A because r₁+r₂=A geometry of prism. So δ = i₁+i₂-A. If prism thin, A small, deviation small. If i₁ small, i₂ large, δ may be large. This is net angle between incident direction and emergent direction.

Prism angle A = r₁ + r₂ always, sum of internal refraction angles

Why A=r₁+r₂? Draw prism apex A, normal to two faces, quadrilateral with two right angles at normals, sum of angles 360°, so A + (90-r₁)+(90-r₂)+(angle between normals) etc gives A=r₁+r₂. Why TIR inside? Light inside glass going to air rarer, if incidence at second face r₂ > C≈42°, then TIR inside prism, ray reflects back inside, may exit from third face or get trapped.
